Identifying a Christmas village piece by maker

Department 56 or Lemax?

Department 56 and Lemax are separate makers with separate item numbering. A Department 56 Snow Village or Dickens Village building and a Lemax Caddington or Vail building can share a theme, yet they are never the same catalog piece.

Start with the maker's name on the base, box or label, then narrow to the village line. If the maker is unclear, search the building name and compare photos across both catalogs before relying on a number.

Verify the name and item number together

Search the item number exactly as printed, including any leading zeros. Then confirm the full name matches: a building, a lit accessory and a multi-piece set can use nearly the same words.

If the number returns nothing, try the name alone. A record may lack a photo or date, and a number read from a worn sticker is easy to mistype.

Navigating retired pieces

Retired pieces are no longer produced by the maker but still turn up on the secondhand market. Use the Retired filter here, or browse the year pages for each maker, to see records with a recorded retirement year.

Collector questions

My piece has no visible maker name. Where should I look?
Check the underside of the base, the original box end and any paper or foil label. If none survive, compare architectural details and photos in both the Department 56 and Lemax catalogs.
Can I mix Department 56 and Lemax pieces in one display?
Yes, many collectors do. Scale and style vary between lines, so compare dimensions in seller listings before buying a piece meant to sit beside another.
Does a missing retirement year mean a piece is still available?
No. It only means no retirement date is recorded in the VillageDex entry. Check the catalog details and the maker's own information where available.

Finding and buying the right village piece

Finding retired Christmas village pieces

Choose the Retired filter to see catalog records marked retired. “Not marked retired” is a catalog label, not a promise that a seller has stock. Open a piece's catalog details to check recorded introduction and retirement years; some records have missing dates or photos.

This is a searchable VillageDex catalog, not a claim to list every piece ever made. A larger set, a different edition or a similarly named accessory may have its own item number.

Looking for Christmas village pieces for sale?

Match the maker, item name and item number before comparing eBay listings. Check the seller's photos, condition notes, included parts and shipping terms. An accessory, a building and a multi-piece set may have different contents even when their names are similar.

Find on eBay opens a search, not a guaranteed in-stock offer. Sellers set prices and availability; an asking price is not evidence of a completed sale.
